There are 5 major stages involved in producing in a film.

  1. Development
  2. Pre Production
  3. Production
  4. Post Production
  5. Exhibition

Keeping all these in mind allowed for me, the director of my short film to follow the different stages as a guideline of what was the order production unfolded.

STAGE ONE: DEVELOPMENT

I begin to brainstorm.  What message was I wanting to send out through my short film. I started to write down interests and activities that bought people together through the use of technology. I am aware of all the negative effects of technology, but I wanted to ride the optimistic train and have a positive spin on my film. So I decided to base my story on surfing, and how we use technology to find the perfect waves! RIDE ON! #yewwwww

This image below was taken using an iPhone 6. These are the surf legends who star in my short film!

#weekfive – The Arab Spring Has Sprung

Image result for the arab spring, protester with carbord sign

Jones (2012) states that due to the lack of economic opportunity combined with an authoritarian regime, the event that took place in Tunisia on December 17th 2010, truly tipped the country over the edge…

A revolution was in the air, and the catalyst was Mohamed Bouazizi (Youtube, 2018). Authorities forcibly shut down Mohameds vegetable stand, harassed and humiliated Mohamed, he then took to the streets, and out of protest, he set himself on fire (Youtube, 2018).

After Mohameds death, many took to the streets to protest the injustice and suffering that was being inflicted on the people of Tunisia due to the authoritarian regime. Through the use of technology, protesters were able to share what was happening to the world, and the revolution was broadcasted globally. Social media spread the uprising so quick, that in just one week, the Tunisian government collapsed and its leader fled!

The Tunisian uprising inspired many other Arab countries under similar authoritarian regimes to stand up and bring about change!

The ‘Arab Spring’ had sprung.

Yet, with the success of the revolution, casualties and suffering were to follow…

Below is a clip from the History channel which briefly outlines the good, the bad and the ugly…

‘Mobilising the Masses’

So how do we do this? How can we gather people from all over to come together physically, emotionally,  and consciously as a human collective, and bring about change for the greater good?

The petition which I have chosen to sign, and strongly believe in, is the ‘Stop The Shark Nets’. Humans fear what they do not understand… Just a comfort for nervous beach goers.

Our government is leading the way with fear and ignorance. What happens when these incredible top of the food chain beasts become few and eventually none? who will clean our oceans and keep our waters in order?

I’ve signed this petition because I believe that no living being should be murdered just by going about their own business in their own environment. I’ve signed this petition for all of the wild sea life that have been caught in these murderous nets and that will continue to die because of these shark nets.

If you want to join this campaign, jump on https://www.tamarasmith.com.au/stop_shark_nets and SPREAD THE WORD, SHARK NETS ARE KILLING OUR MARINE LIFE!

#weekthree – Phone Usage Monitored

In our first tutorial class in new comm tech, we were asked to download an application called RealizD. Designed and created by Apple who describe RealizD as a “professionally designed app created specifically for monitoring your iPhone and iPad usage at all times” (App Store, 2018).

Here is a print screen of my recent activity over the past week. I feel somewhat satisfied with the results, yet not surprised. Majority of our tech devices are used for connecting via social platforms and socialising through them, although since I do not use social media, it is evident that I do not need to use my phone for much else, other than google maps, WhatsApp and occasionally asking google random emergency questions like what to do when you get surfboard resin if your eye?

IMG_4768

I must admit, with such a reliance on technologies and connectivness with others via social media platforms, I might be missing out on making and creating these connections with people and/or robots… eventually I will become a part of a generation who will be left behind, as new communication technologies continue to evolve and take over every aspect of our lives.

Till then, it’s been nice knowing you, literally.

#weekfour – Web 3.0

The video above briefly explains the variation between web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Also referred to as the ‘semantic web’, web 3.0 is upon us, collecting our every move through our various new and old communication technological devices such as our phones, computers, laptops, and other appliances we are probably not even aware of.

Basically, all these technologies communicate with one another through the internet to meet our desires, wants and interests, and basically feed us what ‘they’ think we need and want to be fed.

So next time you jump on YouTube, do not think it is a coincidence that the recommended videos are randomised…

Screen Shot 2018-08-07 at 8.09.32 pm

Or when your Spotify makes suggestions as to what you might like to listen to next based on what you have played previously.

Screen Shot 2018-08-07 at 8.10.36 pm

Is it just me, or do you also think web 3.0 can begin to limit ones path of discovering new thoughts and ideas? Will this mean we will all begin to live in our own personalised worlds? Looks as though we might begin to loose our individual identities and individualities…

Till then, lets watch this space, ‘CYBER SPACE’.

#weekfour – Operating Systems

So what are operating systems?

The video below gives a quick and basic explanation of what operating systems are, and the various types of technological devices which use operating systems. Two of the most commonly used operating systems are Microsoft Windows and Mac OS10.

We have become extremely dependent on our digital technological devices, which means these giant tech companies will continue to feed us with their advancements and upgrades. Where will this all take us? What will we become? I fear a world controlled not by humans, but rather an army of advanced digital technologies through these operating systems!

#weekthree – A Collection of Sources

If I can travel back in time, I would, to the year 2000… there, I would take a moment to truly appreciate my high school library. Although, there has not been a Doc Brown time travel machine invented, yet anyway… but not to fear folks! If I can’t time travel, I sure can appreciate the present, so let me introduce to you the Griffith University Library!

A buddy to all students and teachers, the Griffith Library can be accessed online or in person. Now, we are all aware of the traditional libraries growing up, but undeniably we must keep up with the evolution of technologies and also accomodate peoples lifestyles and schedules.

The creation of Griffith’s online library has been a huge success. As a current student, I find myself upstairs in the quite study zone, totally silent and enjoying the peacefulness whilst I get my studies done. There I am able to access countless books, e journals, news articles and more at the touch of a button, without the need to carry multiple books around.

With assigned assessments, research is necessary to gather information and stimulate ideas and thoughts about particular subjects. Whether broad or narrow, Griffith Library offers all kinds of valuable information to help us find what we are looking for. References, academics and peer reviewed sources can all be found on the Griffith Library website.

I may not be able to time travel in a DeLorean time machine vehicle, but for now, I can indulge in Griffiths Online Library.

See images below which demonstrate how easy it is to access and use the Griffith Library Online!

Type your required content in the library search engine… If you are looking for peer reviewed documents, do not forget to click the option!

Screen Shot 2018-08-06 at 12.01.17 pm

Click enter, and you will find yourself on this page below, where you will be able to refine your search and sift through hundreds of content in reference to your topic.

Screen Shot 2018-08-06 at 12.13.41 pm

You will be able to preview the article, and if it is what your looking for, click the ‘Full Text Online’ option, which will then take you to the online article.

Screen Shot 2018-08-06 at 12.15.09 pm

You can see here, I have demonstrated in just a few steps how to search peer reviewed content through the Griffith online library.

It has taken time, practise and persistence, although once you get your head around the online library, it truly becomes your best friend!

#weekthree – Law Abiding Citizen

Copyright

O.M.G. today I realised that I’d be living against the law! I never really took a second to stop and think whose images I was copying and saving to my desktop, and whose work I was literally ‘stealing’ for my own personal use.

Well let me begin by giving Lawrence Lessig a shoutout! Lawrence Lessig is the creator and founder of CC which was established in the early 2000s. A site super easy to navigate and use which allows free and LEGAL content to be shared, uploaded and used amongst us folks on the other side of our digital devices.

CC allows artists in all categories to have their work acknowledged and recognised by millions of people who access their work via the CC website, and for those who are accessing the content need not to worry, you are not breaching any copyright rules or regulations!

So now that I am aware of CC, I can acclaim to be a law abiding citizen! Well digitally anyway…

#weektwo – Personal Data Used as Online Currency

The video above explores the issue around online privacy and how websites are collecting and harvesting our personal data and information to then use this information to market and advertise in accordance to that data.

Think about the shoes you have in your online cart, or that artist whose work you ‘liked’ on various social media platforms, perhaps it was that ad with the super hot babe drinking a mouth watering beverage? you are probably thinking, and so what? well ladies and gents, every move you make online is being monitored.

Those shoes you like, well you’ll start to see more of what that brand has to offer through advertisement on your online platforms, that beverage that looked incredibly irresistible, yep that too will pop up and countless more. There to entice and persuade you… a seriously powerful marketing and brainwashing tool.

Are we free? do we have agency over what we want to read, watch and observe on our personal digital social platforms? are we slowly turning into someone or something we have no control over?

BE AWARE, SURF THE INTERNET CONSCIOUSLY.
